Teen Driving Requirements in Texas: What Parents and Students Need to Know

Learning to drive is a major milestone for teenagers, and in Texas, the process is structured to ensure safety, responsibility, and proper education. Whether you’re a teen or a parent, understanding the teen driving laws in Texas, the Texas driving license age, and the parent-taught driving programs is crucial.

At Learn 2 Drive Academy, with service locations in Grapevine, Irving, and Fort Worth, TX, we are dedicated to guiding families through the entire journey. As a DPS-authorized road test provider and one of the best driving schools in each of these cities, we are your trusted partner in safe teen driving education.

Teen Driving Laws in Texas

Texas has a Graduated Driver License (GDL) Program to help teens gain experience in stages:

Phase 1 – Learner License:

  • Must be at least 15 years old.
  • Must complete the first 24 hours of a state-approved driver education course.
  • Once you complete 6 hours of the course, you will be eligible to obtain your learner’s licence.
  • Requires holding the learner’s license for at least 6 months before advancing.
  • During this phase, teens must drive with a licensed adult (21+ years old) in the front seat.

Phase 2 – Provisional License:

  • Must be 16 years old.
  • Must have completed 24 hours of classroom instruction and 30 hours of behind-the-wheel training with Parents(at least 10 at night).
  • With Driving School 7/7 behind – the – wheel training
  • Must pass the driving skills test (road test).
  • Restrictions: No driving between midnight and 5 a.m. unless necessary for school/work, and only one passenger under 21 (non-family).

Texas Driving License Age Requirements

The minimum ages for licenses are:

  • Learner License: 15 years old
  • Provisional License: 16 years old
  • Full License: 18 years old (after completing the provisional phase)

Parents should ensure teens meet all prerequisites before booking a road test in Grapevine, Irving, or Fort Worth through Learn 2 Drive Academy.

Parent-Taught Driving in Texas

Many families opt for Parent Taught Driver Education (PTDE). Texas allows parents to act as driving instructors using approved PTDE courses.

How PTDE Works:

  • Parents must request a PTDE packet from the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR).
  • The parent and student complete the required coursework and in-car instruction together.
  • Once complete, students can take the driving test at a DPS-authorized road test provider like Learn 2 Drive Academy.

We proudly support parents in Irving, Grapevine, and Fort Worth with expert advice and test readiness.
